Wax Melt Burner Troubleshooting

Wax Melt Burner Troubleshooting

Weak scent, smoke, soot, or a burner that’s not heating properly? Use these quick fixes to get your wax melt burner back to doing its thing.

Quick win: If you can’t smell your wax melts, swap the wax first. The wax can still look “fine” even when the fragrance has finished.

I can’t smell my wax melts

  • Finished wax: fragrance evaporates over time — replace it.
  • Nose-blind: swap scent or take a short break if you use melts daily.
  • Not hot enough: electric burners give steadier warmth.
  • Drafts: windows, doorways and fans pull scent away.

Try a fresh scent from wax melts or browse electric burners.

My burner is smoking or smells burnt

  • Too much heat: the wax pool may be overheating (especially when wax is low).
  • Tealight issues: poor tealights or drafts can cause smoke and soot.
  • Burn time: shorter sessions often work better than hours on end.

Let everything cool, clean the dish, then restart with fresh wax. Shop tealight burners or electric burners.

There’s soot on my tealight burner

  • Drafts: moving air can make the flame burn “dirty”.
  • Tealight quality: low-quality tealights can soot more.
  • Positioning: ensure the tealight sits properly and isn’t cramped.

Prefer a cleaner option? Try electric wax melt burners.

My electric/touch burner isn’t heating properly

  • Bulb/wattage: check you’re using the correct bulb type and wattage for your burner.
  • Loose bulb: ensure it’s seated properly (don’t overtighten).
  • Socket: try a different socket if it’s touch-sensitive and acting temperamental.

Browse electric & plug-in burners.

The wax melted, but it smells of nothing

  • It’s done: once fragrance evaporates, you’re just warming plain wax.
  • Switch it: remove, wipe the dish, and pop in a fresh piece.

Grab a new scent from wax melts.
